History

1913

Coast Guard Lightship #82, with 6 crew members, sunk during the November storm

1915

The federal government starts planning for a lightstation at Point Abino.

1916

Designs completed.

1917

Construction of lighthouse and dock

1918

3rd order Fresnel lens put into operation

1918

Lightkeeper’s dwelling finished in time for the 1918 shipping season

1918 – 53

Patrick Augustine serves as first lightkeeper

1936

Electrical power introduced, replacing the kerosene lamp with a 1000w incandescent lamp

1940’s

Municipal water brought out to the lightkeeper’s dwelling

1950’s

1000 watt incandescent light replaced with a 400 watt mercury vapour lamp

1960- 90

Lewis Anderson serves as lightkeeper

1985

Severe storm in November forces ice into lighthouse destroying all records

1986

Extensive repairs carried out and cargo doors blocked in

1988

Lighthouse is classified as a Federal Heritage Building

1989

Lighthouse is fully automated and the lightkeeper is no longer needed.  Mr Anderson stays on as caretaker

1995

Last year of operation

1996

Lighthouse and keeper’s dwelling declared surplus

1997

Machinery and mercury bed for the light removed and an assessment of the lighthouse is made

1998

The lighthouse only is designated a National Historic Site by Minister Sheila Copps

1999

The Lighthouse is designated by the Ontario Heritage Ministry

2003

Lightstation and keeper’s dwelling purchased by the Town of Fort Erie

2009

Keeper’s dwelling is designated a heritage building by the Town of Fort Erie

2011

Structural and Exterior Restoration of Lighthouse.
Lightkeepers dwelling sold and is now a private residence..
